Vegetarian food options in NYC - Part 1

On demand, here is a guide to vegetarian food in New York City that doesn't include the usual pizzas, pastas and sandwiches.

New York is a foodie's paradise. You get try out cuisines from so many different parts of the world without necessarily breaking the bank.

Some of my favourite restaurants in New York are:

This restaurant features food from the X'ian province of China (think Terracotta Warriors). This is a very cold, harsh terrain and not much rice grows there so their staple diet is thick, chewy, hand pulled noodles.

Their Spicy Tofu is an all-time favourite

The menu is displayed on the wall and vegetarian options are marked in Green. Their chilled Jasmine tea is also very nice. It has an actual Jasmine bud inside.

Though it is all-day dining, this self-service restaurant is a very popular lunch spot, so go early or late to avoid long queues. This restaurant has multiple locations across New York.

Creperie - $

Creperie has 2 tiny locations in NYC. They have a variety of vegetarian crepes, but the only thing we ever eat there is the Chocolate Lover's Crepe (may have eggs) that has Chocolate Brownie, Chocolate Fudge, Banana, Ice cream and Whipped Cream!!! Pure Bliss!!! What more can one ask for???

Meske - $$

Meske is an Ethiopian Restaurant with 2 locations in NYC. Their Vegetarian Combo is a must try. It consists of Injera which is similar to a crepe or an open dosa with small servings of dals, vegetables and pulses on it. You can order extra Injera on the side.

Chipotle Mexican Grill - $$

This is my go-to place for the Burrito Bowl. You have to build your own bowl. You can select from white or brown rice, 2-3 types of beans, topped off with your choice of sauteed capsicums and onions, 3 types of salsa - spicy, medium or mild, lettuce, guacamole, cheese and sour cream. This is a chain of restaurants with so many locations in NYC that you are almost always within walking distance of one.

Nutella Bar - $$

A must-visit for all Nutella Fans, this place is inside Eataly an Italian marketplace featuring shops, restaurants, cafes etc. It features Nutella waffles, pastries, gelato, crepes... All things Nutella!!

Hangawi - $$$

This restaurant serves Korean Vegan food. Their rice stone bowls are a must try. Rice and various toppings of vegetables, avocado, tofu etc. together with sauces or pastes are served in hot stone bowls.

This restaurant has only 1 location and don't go without reservation.

Vatan - $$$

If you are craving for Gujarati food, this is as close to the authentic Thali as you can get in NYC. There is a starter thali, followed by the main thali, followed by rice and desserts. It is an eat all you can, so you can ask for as many repeats as you like. For full value for money, go on an empty stomach. Vatan has open courtyard-style seating and is open for dinner only.

Rosa Mexicano - $$$

Famous for their Tableside Guacamole, Rosa Mexicano has multiple locations in NYC with online reservations on their own website.

Junoon - $$$$

This is our own, award winning, Michelin starred, Indian Masterchef Vikas Khanna's restaurant. It features Indian food with a modern twist.

More Resources:

You can call the restaurants directly and make reservations.

Yelp has restaurant ratings, reviews, address, timings, menu etc. If you can't download their app on an Android, you can still visit their website. It also allows you to make reservations.

You can make restaurant reservations on Open Table too.

On my wishlist is Taim Falafel - $ which is amongst Zagat's 50 Best restaurants in NYC!! Taim has 2  tiny locations plus a seasonal food truck in NYC. The Falafel Platter, Hummus and Israeli Salad are recommended.

Price Range:

$ - Inexpensive
$$ - Moderately priced
$$$ - Pricey
$$$$ - Very Expensive
